Dr. Michaela Tozzi: What the fuck! You all are not going to believe this. So I'm minding my own business, looking through YouTube, and I see all these YouTubers that are whitening their teeth with tin foil, toothpaste and baking soda.

Dr. Michaela Tozzi: Dr. Tozzi here today, and today we are going to be talking about some little DIY nonsense that I've been seeing on YouTube about how to whiten your teeth. But first, if you haven't already, please make sure you subscribe to my channel, like this video, and leave your comments below. I read every single one of them, and I really appreciate your feedback. Let's get started.

Dr. Michaela Tozzi: We know everybody wants to have white teeth, but maybe it's just not fitting in your budget right now to go to the dentist and pay $500, $600 to have them professionally whitened. I get it. But what's currently trending right now is a lot of people are using this tin foil, toothpaste and baking soda concoction and putting it on their teeth and trying to get the results that you would get at a professional dental office. So let's talk about that.

Dr. Michaela Tozzi: So, after watching several of these videos, what I kind of gathered is happening is they're taking a bowl, they're putting baking soda in there, some toothpaste, stirring up this concoction, slathering it in some tin foil and then putting it in their mouth over their teeth and letting it sit. It looks like some nasty ooey gooey grill that no one wants on their teeth. Is it safe? Should you be doing this? In my opinion, I would say the answer is no. It's not going to kill you, but I would say there's probably better ways to whiten your teeth than to do some DIY, kind of ghetto home remedy to try and whiten your teeth.

Dr. Michaela Tozzi: Okay, so what's the big deal? Why isn't it safe? Okay, a couple of reasons. Number one, baking soda is really abrasive, and if people overdo it, because people always think more is better. So, if I whiten my teeth with this little concoction once a day, I leave it in for two hours a day for a week straight. That abrasiveness is going to wear away your enamel. Not good, because it doesn't come back. Second reason is tin foil on your teeth. I don't know if you did this when you were little. Put a gum wrapper in your mouth and you got crazy zingers. That exact same thing can happen if you do this little home bleaching remedy.

Dr. Michaela Tozzi: If you're on a budget, that's okay, I get it. Go buy some Crest Whitestrips at the store and try that instead. At least it's been approved through the FDA, got the ADA seal of approval, and you're not just whipping up something in your kitchen and trying to achieve white teeth. Okay, so now that kind of we've covered the whole DIY realm of tin foil on her teeth with baking soda concoction, let's talk about what I do in my office for professional whitening.

Dr. Michaela Tozzi: One system that I really love, and I've tried a lot, is actually the Zoom Whitening. It's been around for a long time, but it's still one of my faves, takes about an hour, hour and a half to do. Most patients do at once a year and that's it, you're done. Minimal sensitivity and you got that blinged out smile that you're looking for in the first place.

Dr. Michaela Tozzi: One other option that we do quite frequently here, and it's not quite as spendy as Zoom Whitening. We'll make custom fit whitening trays for you and send you home with some tubes of bleach, and then that way you can maintain at home at your leisure. When you feel like you need to brighten up, pop your trays in with the bleach, let it sit 30, 45 minutes and take them out. And, voila, you've got a little more pep in your step, smile's a little bit brighter.

Dr. Michaela Tozzi: Okay. So here is some Zoom Whitening take-home gel. Here are your trays customized just for you that you can pop in, like I said, pop in anytime you feel like you need to brighten up your smile. And you can do it on your own time at home. So I don't know about you, but I would get the Zoom Whitening in the office just for this simple perk. You get to wear these really cool shades for like an hour.

Dr. Michaela Tozzi: If you can't see moi in Las Vegas, talk to your dentist about what whitening options they might have available. Remember to like my video, subscribe to my YouTube channel and follow me on Instagram @DrMichaelaTozzi. Until next time, keep smiling and keep blinging.
